My envision of death is a black, endless, nothing encapsuling our soul within it's silent womb. This old man is facing the knowledge that his whole excistence is being held in his own hands. The moment he stops smoking he will disolve and disappear completely. The only thing remaining will be his pipe - and his legacy. The colors symbolize his soul, and the smoke his remaining will to live. I believe, no matter how dull a person, his soul will always have some unseen color being supressed by the feeling of loneliness. The light and glow represent his good deeds and accomplishments. It can represent his role and warmth as a father-figure.
Time spent: 10+ hours (about a week on and off)
Technique: hundreds of layers with smoke brushes shaped into a face using the transform tools of photoshop. NO DRAWINGI got inspiration to this piece from, after she had seen my deviation called "Soulcatcher" . She suggested that I did something similar, but with a pipe, and I couldn't get the idea of a portrait smoking itself out of a pipe - off my mind.
Time to think was made with resources from these deviants:
Love it. Conceptually brilliant, the way the smoke emanating from the pipe creates his face is beautiful. The smoke itself is actually very well done, I mean, it looks like real smoke. Something about this image provokes thought, leaving the smoke aside, I think the 'lost in thought' look on his face is what does this, perplexing aye. What I don't like about this picture though, is the colors, stunning as they seem I feel as though it would look better without the rainbow on his face, but hey, that;s just my opinion. Overall though, well done. Best regards. Dimuthu
